The first change I noticed when I reached the settlement again was how quiet everything suddenly seemed. Everyone had hurried home after the long battle, and the dirt road was mostly empty. The few goblins we came across walked a very wide circle around us and avoided looking in our direction. I chalked it up to the T. Rex that was walking with us.

I heard a growl and something thrashing on the ground to my left. I turned to see the lizard chained to the stable still staring at me and looking quite vicious.

“Damn it, what now?” The door to the stable swung open, and a familiar goblin girl stepped out.

“Tac?” I called out.

Tac jumped and spun around quickly, her eyes wide. “Who…?”

Another goblin girl stepped out from the stable. “Gentlelin, we did not see you there! Are you headed back to...” Tic’s eyes widened as she saw the T. Rex behind us, but she quickly composed herself with a smile. “If you want to leave your mount at the stables, sir, Tac can try to accommodate it here.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I said reassuringly. The T. Rex lowered its head by my side, and I petted it on the snout. “She’s probably happier staying outside.”

“Are you sure about that? It doesn’t look that hard to handle,” Tac said, straining to act tough while obviously looking relieved that she wouldn’t have to deal with a T. Rex.

“Yeah, as long as it’s not too much trouble for you guys, I’d like to keep her outside to guard the settlement,” I said.

“Oh, that won’t be any trouble at all, sir! I’ll have Tac bring your… mount to the main gate.” Tic smiled at her sister as she passed the big, scaly responsibility off to her.

“Also, if it’s not too much trouble,” I called out to the sisters, “can you show us to an inn or boarding house here where we can set up for the night?”

Tic shook her head. “This is a small plantation, and we don’t often get over-night visitors, so we actually don’t have an official inn.” She smiled again. “Of course, madam Blumdoc is more than happy to offer you lodging at the manor for as long as you’ll be staying in Beane territory.”

I frowned. “Are you sure? There are six of us. It’s not a small party to accommodate so suddenly.”

Tic gestured for us to follow her back to the Blumdoc manor. “You may not have known, sir, but the madam was preparing your rooms for you the moment she heard that there were visitors.”

“Really?” I asked.

The goblin girl looked up at me. “Do you find that hard to believe, sir?”

“I kinda do,” I admitted. “I mean, does she know we are from the Griots clan?”

“Yup,” Tic said as an exasperated look briefly passed over her professional smile. “And it made madam want to shower you all with even more hospitality. You’ll find she has quite an influence over Elder Blumdoc’s perspective on the Beane-Griots relations.”

“What do you mean by that?” I asked, hoping to get a little more information from this conversation.
